Telecommuting Can Increase Employee Productivity
One of the many concerns that California employers have when it comes to allowing telecommuting facilities, is the loss of productivity in the workplace. However, the study that was conducted by University Of Illinois researchers found that employees who telecommute actually enjoyed positive effects that also impacted their performance.
There were long-term positive effects for employees who telecommuted to work. The researchers found telecommuting was linked with improvements in certain types of performance. Overall, the researchers found that when employees telecommuted, there was a definite measurable impact on the performance, which ultimately improved the work environment, and contributed to a more cooperative workplace.
Telecommuting for employees has been in the spotlight over the past few months, especially after Yahoo announced that it would be eliminating telecommuting as an option for its employees. The researchers however say, that there’s very little evidence to indicate that telecommuting is harmful to employee productivity. On the contrary, there are more and more studies that now suggest that telecommuting is beneficial to employees
However, if you are an employer who’s considering the telecommuting option to make things easier on employees and boost employee morale, there are things to keep in mind. For one thing, make sure that your policies are consistent. You don’t want to come across as being discriminatory. It may be acceptable to have a policy that requires employees to work full-time and on-site for a few months for a minimum period before they can move to telecommuting. However, make sure that all employees are covered equally and fairly under the policy.
